Add sales tax to a price, or work backwards from a tax-included total, for any province or territory.
Sales tax rates by province (2026)
| Province / territory | Tax | Total rate |
|---|---|---|
| Alberta, Yukon, NWT, Nunavut | GST 5% | 5% |
| British Columbia | GST 5% + PST 7% | 12% |
| Saskatchewan | GST 5% + PST 6% | 11% |
| Manitoba | GST 5% + RST 7% | 12% |
| Ontario | HST | 13% |
| Quebec | GST 5% + QST 9.975% | 14.975% |
| Nova Scotia | HST | 14% |
| New Brunswick, Newfoundland and Labrador, PEI | HST | 15% |
How to remove tax from a total
To find the price before tax, divide the total by 1 plus the rate. Example in Ontario: $113 / 1.13 = $100 before HST. Do not simply subtract 13% from the total; that gives the wrong answer ($98.31).
GST vs. HST vs. PST
The GST is the 5% federal tax. In the HST provinces it is combined with the provincial portion into one Harmonized Sales Tax. In BC, Saskatchewan, Manitoba and Quebec, the provincial tax is separate and can apply to a slightly different list of goods.
