Percentage formulas
| Question | Formula | Example |
|---|---|---|
| What is X% of Y? | Y x X / 100 | 15% of 200 = 30 |
| X is what % of Y? | X / Y x 100 | 30 of 120 = 25% |
| Percentage change | (new – old) / old x 100 | 80 to 100 = +25% |
| Add X% to Y | Y x (1 + X/100) | 50 + 13% = 56.50 |
Everyday uses
- Discounts: 30% off $80 means you pay $80 x 0.70 = $56.
- Raises: a raise from $60,000 to $63,000 is a 5% increase.
- Sales tax: adding 13% HST is the same as multiplying by 1.13. Try our sales tax calculator.
- Grades: 42 out of 50 is 84%.
Common mistake
A 50% drop followed by a 50% rise does not bring you back to where you started: 100 becomes 50, then 75. Percentage changes are always calculated on the starting value of each step.
